Every story has a journey
Your story matters. Together, we refine, shape, and polish it, keeping your vision at the heart of every edit.
At KittyQuill, every edit is a labor of love (and occasionally a little mischief). Let us share the story behind how we made this possible.
Our Story
Founded in 2025, KittyQuill Editorial Services began as a dream that had been quietly growing for years. We are a small business that is built on over 12 years of experience in criminal justice and criminology. After more than a decade immersed in the book and retail world, our founder set out to blend expertise with passion; crafting a unique editorial adventure.

'Kitty' comes from our founders name, it is also a nod to a lifelong love of cats. Our team adores these clever, curious creatures, and we’re proud to support cat sanctuaries through donations and fundraising whenever we can.
A name with character
KittyQuill isn’t just a name; it’s a story in itself.
Together, KittyQuill captures who we are: passionate about stories, meticulous in our craft, and inspired by the curiosity, playfulness, and independence of cats. At the heart of KittyQuill is one simple goal:
Helping your story land gracefully
'Quill' reflects our dedication to traditional, human led editorial practices. Every manuscript is carefully reviewed and signed off with a quill, adding a personal touch from academic studies into law and a bit of charm to every project.
Dr. Sophie Kitty Kay MA BaH
Meet our founder!
Hello!, I’m Sophie! Founder of KittyQuill Editorial Services. I’ve loved books since I was a child, and running my own business in the world of books is truly a dream come true.
But, before I go on, yes - My name is truly, Dr Kitty Kay (It suits my personality perfectly!). I’ve been fascinated about criminology since I was 15, and now, I hold a PhD in exploring the limits of the law and media misogyny of female offenders. My thesis focused on women who kill in self-defence and the misconceptions surrounding these crimes and its offenders; this was continued from my masters degree. I’ve also conducted research into prison reform and education for rehabilitating high-risk Category A offenders, and I’ve worked in some of Britain’s highest-security prisons. So you could say that I’ve seen it all!
Alongside my studies, I’ve always worked in the book world, primarily in retail. I love engaging with people, I regularly organised book signings; liaising with publishers and authors, marketing every stage of a story’s journey, as well as editing many small press and indie authors stories. It was here that I discovered a real passion for editing and supporting writers.
In 2023, at 26, after a long battle and many admissions to the hospital, I was diagnosed with Secondary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. This encouraged me to reconsider my career path in criminology and focus on what I truly love and do best. That turning point led to the creation of KittyQuill.
I committed myself to developing a strong foundation in business, gaining multiple qualifications in business management and enterprise skills. By combining my two passions, books and crime, I’ve built a business that fulfils both my professional ambitions and personal interests, while creating something meaningful and sustainable for myself, my colleagues, and the authors I work with.

Aside from my professional work, I’m a massive nerd and animal lover! I have 4 cats, Im big into my motorbikes and I enjoy dancing. I love all things video games, anime, books, board games, tabletop, comics - you name it. I’m very artistic and I enjoy making my own clothes, always trying to stay as sustainable as possible. Cosplay is another passion of mine; I’ve created countless outfits for conventions and I also attend as a guest, giving talks and panels on how to make your own. Feel free to ask me about it—I love sharing tips, tricks and stories!

The stories we care about extend far beyond books.
Who do we work with?
KittyQuill is proud to work with a range of people and organisations that reflect both the heart of our business and the values behind it. Whilst supporting authors is at the core of what we do, we also collaborate with charities and communities close to our hearts, shaped by passion, care, and lived experience. Giving back is deeply important to us, and staying connected to the wider community brings perspective, purpose, and gratitude to the work we do every day. It reminds us that every story matters, both on and off the page.
Mental health and wellbeing are also central to our approach. As qualified Mental Health Welfare Officers, we are trained to recognise when clients may be experiencing challenges and to offer supportive, understanding communication throughout the editing process. Writing can be both a creative outlet and a form of escape, and we strive to make our services a positive and supportive experience for every author we work with.

Mind
We proudly support Mind and their work to raise awareness and provide vital support for mental health across the UK. Their commitment to ensuring that no one faces a mental health problem alone reflects our own belief in compassion, understanding, and meaningful human connection. Writing and creativity are deeply personal, and we recognise the importance of safeguarding wellbeing within the creative community.

MS Society
Supporting the MS Society is deeply personal to us. As our founder lives with multiple sclerosis, their work holds particular meaning, and we are proud to raise awareness and contribute wherever we can. The support, advocacy, and research they provide make a real difference to individuals and families across the UK, and we are honoured to stand alongside their efforts.

Cats Protection
As lifelong cat lovers, we support Cats Protection through fundraising and donations to help care for and rehome cats in need. Their work in rescuing vulnerable cats, providing veterinary care, and matching them with safe, loving homes is something we deeply admire. Supporting animal welfare is an important part of who we are, and we’re proud to contribute to a cause that reflects our compassion and sense of responsibility.

Refuge
We’re passionate about supporting Refuge and the vital work they do to help those affected by domestic abuse rebuild their lives safely. Through specialist services, safe accommodation, and advocacy, Refuge provides essential protection and practical support to individuals and families in crisis. We are proud to stand behind an organisation that offers safety, empowerment, and hope to those who need it most.
